Susan "Aunt Sukey" Richardson
Susan Richardson escaped slavery, officially indentured servitude, in southern Illinois in 1842 with her three children. She was caught and jailed in Knox County, but regained her freedom with assistance of a local antislavery committee. She lost her children, however, when they were caught and returned to bondage. She became a leading Underground Railroad agent. Her gravesite remained unmarked until 2004, when an organization Friends of Hope Cemetery funded addition of a gravestone, reflecting a reimagining of the city's race relations.
