The McWorter or Old Cemetery of Philadelphia, Illinois
This cemetery, now part of an archaeological site, holds the remains of African American residents of the mixed-race community of New Philadelphia. Philadelphia was a village in Pike County founded in 1836 by Frank McWorter, a former slave who sold land lots to black, white, and mixed-race settlers, using the proceeds to buy the freedom of sixteen relatives. New Philadelphia, as it became known, is claimed to have been an underground railroad station. It flourished until the late nineteenth century.
